Edwin Jay “Sug” Higgins, 93, of West Newton, PA passed away Monday, April 17, 2023 at his home following a courageous 3-year battle with cancer. He was born March 3, 1930 in Madison, PA. Son of the late James and Sara (Lee) Higgins. He graduated from the former Sewickley Township High School in Herminie, PA. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout. He was a self-employed plastering contractor for over 70 years. He was especially known for his artful ceiling patterns. He was an avid gardener of which he joyfully shared his bounty of fruits and vegetables. He loved to hunt, camp and fish. He enjoyed listening to gospel and country classic music and watching the old western TV shows and movies. He was a member of the Downtown United Methodist Church in Madison, PA for many years having served as usher and trustee. The same church that he married his sweetheart, Doris Aleen Trout, on March 30, 1951. He is preceded in death by two infant siblings; brothers, Eugene (Eleanor) Higgins, Junior (Elizabeth) Higgins and John (Patricia) Higgins two sisters, Florence VanHorn and Betty (Donald) Ames. He is survived by four daughters, Sharon Kolar, Linda (James) Sherman, Sandra (Frank) Pleva all of West Newton, PA and Tamara (Floyd) Kalkbrenner of South Park, PA; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; brothers, Dean (Carole) Higgins of Madison, PA and George (Marie) Higgins of South Houston, TX and sisters, Roberta (Donald) Gibson of Sandy Lake, PA and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at the Beatty-Rich Funeral Home, Inc. Rt 136 Madison, PA – Ronald A. Rich Jr., Supervisor/FD. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 21, 2023 at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Green officiating. Interment will follow at the Madison Union Cemetery in Madison, PA. The family would like to thank UPMC East and Excela Westmoreland Hospital, especially Amedysis and Excela Hospice nurses for all their loving and compassionate care provided to their father. Also, the family would like to thank REMS for the transportation to and from the hospital. A special thank you to the sweet friend who thoughtfully sent encouragement cards weekly since he lost his wife of 69 years in December of 2020. He looked forward to them. God bless your kindness.
